I'm excited to announce I have some prints for sale through Artflakes. They offer everything from greeting cards to posters and prints on canvas in a variety of sizes. If you're looking to pick up some artwork from yours truly, here's a perfect opportunity. I just received an e-mail notification that one of my images is currently featured on Coroflot's portfolio page. Coroflot is a portfolio site and hub for all sorts of creative professionals, and has 1,000s of new images uploaded daily. Out of those, only a few are selected to be featured for any given day or week. I have to admit that I'm a little surprised that out of everything I have on display, this image was chosen. Nevertheless, I'm excited that it resonated with so many people.

Now it's time to get back to enjoying Colorado's beautiful weather and do some drawing. Have a great weekend!

A few pages from my sketchbook and a character...First page was drawn from life. My friends Mark and Belinda over at the Pompous Zombie tattoo studio let me hang out and draw for a bit while they were working. Oh hey there. So after getting some feedback on the designs from the last post (#4), I decided to move forward with this one. There were a few popular choices from the early silhouettes I worked on, but I think this one seemed to resonate the most with people. I ended up doing a couple views of it, and also included an idea for what it could look like with a grenade launcher attachment as well. Thanks for taking a look.

Colored Version

I just got back from a trip to Texas with my girlfriend and am getting back into the swing of things again. It was nice to get out of town for a bit and see some new sights and visit her family, but I have to say it's good to be back in Colorado.

Here is the final colored version of this image. I had a ton of fun working on it and hope to continue doing some more abstract work in the future. Despite its idiosyncrasies, I'm really starting to enjoy using Corel Painter in addition to Photoshop. I think it has a lot of interesting capabilities and I would love to spend a bit more time exploring it. Make sure to check back soon, I will have some new work to share very soon. Here's a little something I was working on last night. It's been a little while since I worked on an abstract piece, but I spent a bit of time yesterday creating some new brushes and was eager to try them out. Still considering adding some color to it, but here's where it's at so far.

I'm in the process of applying for The Art Department (TAD), and that means that I've been scrambling to get decent scans of the work I've been doing over the past few months. So I should have some more work to share in the coming days, but for now just this sketch page. One of the last ones in my small sketchbook...

Finished sketches + new digital experiment

Okay, so here's what I ended up with for the new batch of gun thumbnails- a couple shotguns, a couple sniper rifles a sub-machine gun and an assault rifle. All intended to fit within the visual/ technology level of modern firearms. Not coming from any sort of engineering or industrial design background, it's an interesting experiment to try to design these things. Function, intent and ergonomics would seemingly limit the possibilities for visual solutions and yet they do not; there is a seemingly endless amount of variations available to play with. And I'm also including another digital abstract I finished yesterday. Just for fun, but also a good excuse to play with some new brushes.

I've been away for a little bit, but I've been drawing pretty steadily. I've got a few pages from my sketchbook to share; they represent some of my more recent experiments with abstraction and design. They start with some smaller compositional studies (thumbnails) and develop into full page explorations. I'm pretty excited to watch this series of drawings develop and have plans to take what I have learned here and apply it to some works of larger scale. I also took a some time the other night to re-design the header image for this blog as well as the overall layout. As always, thanks for looking.

I still feel like I have some ground left to cover in the ideas I laid out in the previous post, and these three images represent my latest experiments within in that series of ideas. All three are done in Photoshop; the first and third images are painted using some custom brushes I created, while the second is hybrid of the same painting techniques combined with manipulation of a photo I took a little while back. Hope you enjoy them!

Last week I caught the Prefuse 73/ Gaslampkiller/ Pantyraid here in Denver and the whole show really blew my mind. It was really interesting to see how the artists were integrating different visual media into each of their live sets and how they essentially were able to create a very accessible and yet dynamic experience for the audience. It was also pretty interesting to see how the physical space of the venue became transformed by the sheer number of people each bringing their own aesthetic and movement into the scene. So many disparate elements united by a sound that you felt as much as heard. I think all of these things in conjunction with the nature of the music, which is in itself very layered, very dense and irregular, all worked in harmony to create a pretty amazing experience. I tried to explore some of these ideas in both of these pieces. They are both a bit of a departure from some other work I have been doing recently, but I thoroughly enjoyed creating both of them and I hope you enjoy looking at them.

I'm trying to get better at environments and using color, so I've been doing a number of landscape studies from photo reference. Here are a couple of my recent favorites. I've also been trying to add some diversity to my portfolio and show some prop designs too. I just finished up a series of firearms which I'm pretty into. I was aiming at creating a series of guns which would fit within a near-future environment; so I tried to make them appear functional yet a little more exaggerated than what you would typically see with modern designs. Maybe I've just been playing a bit too much Modern Warfare 2....

A couple new sketches to share.... The first set of characters was done during a weekly drawing session with a couple friends, and the second image are some vehicle thumbnails I was working on recently.

Also as a side note, I just finished re-formatting my website. The layout needed to be fixed for a while, especially on the gallery page, and I'm happy to report that it has been addressed and hopefully is now much easier to view the images. Check it out here

Here are a couple of drawings I just finished.

Lately I've been finding a lot of inspiration in the urban cityscape. I have noticed that interest manifesting itself up in different ways in different pieces. With these two drawings I was exploring two alternating ideas on how to express and explore the visual clutter and noise that accompanies city life; one being more literal and one dealing more with abstraction. I've got a bunch of new work I am really excited to share, check back soon!

I've been super busy as usual, but I've got a few new scans I would like to share. I had some drawings included in a show at Hooked on Colfax (http://www.myspace.com/hookedoncolfax) a couple weeks back and it was a great time. Thanks Malissa for organizing everything, and thanks Churchill (http://www.myspace.com/churchilltheband) for coming down and playing the live set, you guys sounded great! I was able to sell some of the work I had on display, so I'll include images of the two pieces that are still up for grabs. I'm also in the process of finishing up a few illustrations for a potential job. I've finished two and hope to do three more, but I will include those as well. And last but not least, I'm in the process of completing a portrait of the Roots MC Questlove for my friend Matt. You can take a look at the preliminary sketch below. Anyway, think that's it for now...

I've had a really busy month so far, but I think an update is in order. I recently started doing an internship at the Plus + Gallery (http://www.plusgallery.com/) here in Denver and it has been a great experience so far. It has been really inspiring to be spending time with some of the best art and artists that Denver has to offer. As for my work, I managed to squeeze in a website update (http://www.danabrancucci.com/) as well as plenty of figure drawing at the Art Students' League of Denver, and some sketching around town. I've got a couple new illustrations in the works and I'll update again soon, but in the meantime here are some of my latest efforts from figure drawing....
